Study Staff

Olga Kolesnik, MD, is a Research Program Manager. She is responsible for ensuring design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities. She manages clinical research staff including training, scheduling, coordinating and delegating work, monitoring and evaluating performance to promote maximum staff member benefit and effectiveness as well as overall functional productivity.

Esther Makanjuola, RN, CRNP, is a Clinical Research Nurse. She meets with study participants to ensuring informed consent and compliance with protocol; monitoring subject symptoms; managing continuity of care, and determines recruitment strategy, project timeline and work plan to accomplish research projects.

Cynthia Smith, is a Community Interviewer. She follows established protocols to locate, enroll, and maintain records on research study participants, and conducts structured interviews. She manages all patient documentation for data reporting and tracking purposes, and makes contacts in the community to advertise our research studies.

Donnette Deigh, MS, is a Clinical Research Assistant. She meets with study participants to explain the study, to complete assessments, and to assist with all study visits.

Dr. Irving J. Taylor Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry

Professor Bankole Johnson is the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). Professor Johnson’s work incorporates neuroimaging evaluations into studies of drug interaction to identify the site-specific effects of abused drugs and to evaluate the effectiveness of potential medications for the treatment of addiction.

Weintraub

Eric Weintraub, MD
Division Head, Alcohol & Drug Abuse; Acting Division Head, Adult Psychiatry

Dr. Weintraub is the Director of the Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse in the Department of Psychiatry at the UMSOM. He has expertise in treating patients who are injecting and non-injecting heroin users. Dr. Weintraub has been involved in research to improve the integration of medical and substance abuse care.

David A. Gorelick, MD, PhD
Professor

Dr. David Gorelick is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UMSOM. He is an expert in biological treatments for substance use disorders, with experience using brain imaging methods to study the mechanisms of addiction.

Lawrence W. Adler, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor

Dr. Adler is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UMSOM. He is board-certified in General and Geriatric Psychiatry with expertise in clinical psychopharmacology and alcohol use disorders. Dr. Adler's current research efforts are focused on Alzheimer's Disease.

Melanie E. Bennett, PhD
Professor

Dr. Bennett is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the UMSOM. She has expertise in behavioral treatments for addiction and motivation for health behavior change in individuals with mental health disorders.

Chamindi Seneviratne, MD
Assistant Professor

Dr. Seneviratne is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, UMSOM, and a geneticist at the Institute for Genome Sciences. She has experience in molecular genetics in substance abuse and a primary focus on alcoholism.

Brown_Clayton

Clayton H. Brown, PhD
Associate Professor, Epidemiology & Public Health and Psychiatry

Dr. Brown is a Biostatistician in the Departments of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine and Psychiatry at the UMSOM. He is a biostatistician with extensive experience in the design and analysis of randomized clinical trials of clinical and health service interventions in the areas of substance abuse.
